«A Red Letter Day» песня британской синти‑поп‑группы Pet Shop Boys с альбома Bilingual (1996), написана в стиле синти‑поп, евродэнс. Авторы Neil Tennant и Chris Lowe.
Песня возникла как эксперимент: её гармония основана на аккордовой последовательности из «Оды к радости» Бетховена. В записи участвовал Московский хор (The Choral Academy of Moscow) под управлением Виктора Попова — это добавило композиции монументальное звучание.
Клип снял режиссёр Howard Greenhalgh. Крис Лоу позже назвал его «худшим видео в нашей карьере».
Песня исследует темы тоски, любви и поиска значимых связей. Метафора «красного дня календаря» (red letter day) символизирует особый, радостный день, которого с нетерпением ждут. В контексте композиции это может быть день, когда кто-то скажет: «Я люблю тебя».
Некоторые темы и образы в тексте:
- Пустота достижений. В первых строках описывается жизнь, наполненная рутиной и успехами (работа, звонки, плоды труда), но контрастирующая с ощущением пустоты: «Что значат достижения, если разделить их не с кем?».
- Социум и фасад «холодности». Строка «годы, совершенствующие позицию сдержанной холодности, исчезают как ничтожество» подразумевает, что погоня за общественным одобрением теряет смысл, когда осознаётся важность искренних эмоциональных связей.
- Ностальгия. Упоминание рождественского утра создаёт ощущение невинности и надежды.
